I have gathered a few methods to adjust your photos according to the given aspect ratios. These are multi-platform apps and tools that will allow you to upload vertical pictures on Instagram within a few clicks. Let’s get started. Read: Make Photo Square Without Cropping – Online Tool
Vertical Photos on Instagram
There are two options when you are cropping your images for Instagram:
Portrait: 4:5 Landscape: 1.91:1
Though Instagram is not perfect, there are ways to counter this problem. Some tools and apps will allow you to post vertical photos with a few clicks. Let’s see how.
1. No Crop and Square (Android)
Strange and curious name but a very popular app for those who are looking to upload vertical images on Instagram without having to crop them. No Crop and Square will allow you to post vertical pics like the one you see below.
The process is rather simple. You open the app and choose the image you want to share on Instagram. There are a number of filters and effects to choose from. You can apply any that takes your fancy. There are also smileys, stickers, emojis, and 3D emoticons if that is what you are looking for. You can create a collage in no time. Just add all the images you want to add using the collage tile button. The ability to add text in different fonts, templates, and resize and rotate images makes No Crop and Square a complete Instagram app. The app is free to use but ad-supported which you can remove by upgrading for just $0.99. In my experience, the ads were non-intrusive except for the full-screen popups. Download No Crop and Square (Freemium)
2. Whitagram (iOS)
Whitegram does for iOS powered devices what No Crop does for Android. It allows you to post full-sized images and pics on Instagram without having to crop or resize them. Just choose the image you want to upload in vertical mode and the app will automatically crop it to perfection with a white background.
You see the beauty of it. By adding a white background, it fools Instagram into thinking that the image is a square one. There are other apps out there on the App Store that will give you the desired results. Tip: Always choose the largest resolution when you are working with a vertical image. 3. Pixlr (Online)
Here is the simplest trick in the book. There is a hidden option in Instagram that will allow you to upload vertical images if you know how to crop your images to the right dimension. You can do this on any platform because it is an online tool. Pixlr is a free to use and powerful image editor. You begin by choosing an image and cropping it to a 4:5 ratio. Pretty simple, right? Now, to upload an image to Instagram using your PC browser, you will have to spoof it. Follow this guide. It will tell you how to make Instagram think you are posting from your mobile when in reality, you are using your PC. This is what your screen should like when you have spoofed your browser. You should see the familiar ‘+’ icon at the bottom to add a new image. Read: 8 (+1 New) Ways to Post on Instagram From Computer
When you hit the plus icon and add an image, you should see a expand button that looks like an arrow from either end.
Clicking on that button will post your image in the original 4:5 ratio portrait mode. You will also notice that there are no borders in the white or black background. No more square images that can be annoying as hell when clearly, the portrait should have been the obvious choice. Note that the developer mode trick, as mentioned in the guide shared above, will also work on Mac OS using the Safari browser. In fact, it works on all browsers on all platforms. Visit Pixlr (Free)
4. Instapadder
I can’t stress enough on how annoying Instagram’s rules are. I agree it gives the whole platform a consistent look but the tools that make it happen are non-existent within the app. Instapadder is a web service that aims to remove this problem entirely. You can use it on your computer and Android devices to quickly custom the images to fit Instagram without cropping the content. iOS users can’t get a piece of this particular cake because of their own rules but they can try the iOS-specific method listed above.
To add padding around the images, simply go to the website in your web browser, tap the upload button, and select all the files. It uploads the images to the server and converts the images to an Instagram compatible aspect ratio. The best part about this method is that you can upload and process the images in bulk. It accepts most image formats and spits out converted images fairly quickly. The only limitation I found with this service is the lack of a preview option before downloading the padded images so you can’t choose which images to download. Other than that, Instapadder is pretty slick. Visit Instapadder
5. Polarr Photo Editor (Mac)
Polarr Photo Editor is available on the macOS App Store and could be used as integration to iPhoto editor or a separate editing tool altogether. Once you have downloaded the Polarr Photo Editor (link below), simply open it and import a photo you want to edit for Instagram. Once you are in the editor app, click on the adjustments tab on the right side of the screen. Scroll down and click on ‘Border‘. Now select the aspect ratio and border color from the custom menu available. Clicking on save will save changes to the photo and iPhoto library will be updated immediately. If you are using an iPhone, it’s probably in your iPhone photo library as well.

6. Gramblr (Windows)
If you are using a Windows tablet that supports touch screen, Instagram has announced an app just for you. The app is available on the Windows Store, but what about other users? This is where Gramblr comes into the picture. Earlier, Gramblr didn’t support vertical pictures, but I think they have made some changes in their API because the current version does support it. Here is a screenshot.
As you can see, Gramblr does the trick. The app is free to use and works on all Windows-powered machines including 32bit versions. You will have to create a free account but there is no need to verify your email ID. Just select, crop, add filters, add a caption, and post it on your Instagram. Download Gramblr (Free)
